“ After the SLS showcase a Gozitan and Maltese singer are heading for UK record label.”

Recently Batista Leisure Group organised two important activities to celebrate the first anniversary of The Mediterranean Vocal Studio (MVS) Malta. A Speech Level singing (SLS) Showcase was held at The Manoel Theatre in Valletta with the participation of 26 Artists. 2 Personalities from the British Music Industry, Sir Harry Cowell and Ms. Lou Mullen were amongst the special guests, families and the general public who attended this showcase.

The next day after the showcase, a seminar was held at The Coastline Hotel, in Salina Bay. Here many ideas and important issues concerning Maltese Artists were discussed with the British guests, who hail from the ‘Private and Confidential Music Group’ in London. Subjects tackled included PRS and Artist development past and present. The participation of numerous local Artists made it a very interesting seminar for all. At the end of the seminar the British duo announced that they were so impressed by the MVS Malta showcase performances, that they decided to collaborate with Batista Leisure Group on a number of projects. Local Boy band ‘Naykid’ will be working on a song produced by PNC Music Group, and the British duo will be returning to Malta to work with the boyband in the studio in November 2007.

David Mario Fenech from Fontana Gozo and Rebecca Debattista from Bugibba will also be working on projects with with PNC music group. They will both be travelling to UK in December where they will record a song each. PNC music Group’s aim is to support Maltese singers training at MVS Malta. In fact Batista Leisure Group have concluded a deal with PNC Music group where by there will be full collaboration by both parties to the benefit of Maltese Artists. Before leaving Malta International Airport Sir Harry gave us his comments. “ I am pleased to announce that the overall winner of the SLS Showcase in Malta was David who will travel to the UK later this year to record a song produced by Private and Confidential Music Ltd. We were all excited to find such great talent in Malta. in fact so much so, that we have offered a runner prize to Rebecca and this prize will be the chance to record a new song by Private and Confidential Publishing Ltd. Rebecca will also be travelling to London in December for the recording. We are also hoping to help advise certain other acts we saw on the night. Thank you all so much for making Lou Mullen and I so welcome and thank you to all the sponsors.”

The showcase was sponsored by The Ministry of Arts and Culture, M.T.A., The Manoel Theatre, Mirabelle Enterprises, Coastline Hotel, Island Hotels Group, Air Malta, John’s Garage, Fotoclassic, Where’s Everybody, Twilight Sound, Overview and Creafics. The mayor and counselor Anthony Cassar gave out trophies during the blessing of the horses in front of the Parochial Church dring the Titular Feast.

The Fontana Local Council, is offering lunch for the first time to the elderly living on their own, during the Titular Feast.

The mayor, vice-mayor, counselors and executive secretary wish everyone a happy feast.

FestaTfal was organized by the parish. It was attended by the mayor, the vice-mayor, counselor Maria Schembri and the executive secretary.

The work being done regarding the light system in the shelter next to Ghajn il-Kbira has been completed.

An outing was organized for the elderly in Malta. We visited Hal Ghaxaq during the feast of Saint Joseph where we heard a mass, the capital city Valletta, Imdina and Dr Adrian Garden Centre. While having a coffee in Rabat, a speech was given by representatives of Europe Direct.

The Fontana Local Council has ordered the for the contractor to put the ‘belisha lights’ at the zebra crossing at Triq il-Kappillan Guzepp Hili.

The mayor attended a meeting for the mayors of Malta and Gozo which took place in the Hotel Calypso, Marsalforn.

The mayor spoke with Mr. Anton Cassar, director of the Fontana Cottage Industry where he was asked to help in the organization of the race on the occasion of the Titular feast. He has promised to help, like last year, with the sum of lm200.

An application to the M.E.P.A. was made for the restoration of the niche tas-Salvatur which is found in Triq tal-Ghajn in front the Parocchial Church.

The Council has approved of helping the organizers of the horse races like last year, with the sum of lm 250.
April 2006
The mayor, along with engineer Camilleri of the W.S.C, visited Wied Siekel and the end of Ghajn Tuta street and Pjazza l-Ghejun where the council is expected to make several works. Engineer Camilleri has agreed to give his cooperation.

The mayor and the executive secretary attended a meeting with representatives of ‘Europe Direct’which took place in the Gozo Business Chamber, where, cooperation between both entities was discussed.

The Fontana Local Council will be organizing a day outing to Sicily on Thursday 6th july where Pozzallo, Taormina, Catania and Mount Etna will be visited.

The Fontana Local Council gave out the offerings for the restoration of Ghajn il-kbira, safety carpets and play centre for the playing field.

An outing for kids was organized in Malta where we visited many places including the Wied Ghollieq reserve where the Nature Trust is growing Maltese trees. Here the kids were given explanations by the representatives of the Nature Trust of how they bring in members of the Nature Trust from the council. Afterwards we visited the Fort of Saint Angelo as well as Inquisitor’s Palace in Birgu. The visit concluded at the bay in Marsaxlokk in the occasion of the feast of Saint Gregory. Around 40 children and parents attended.

The executive secretary attended a meeting with the National Commission for people with disabilities, which took place in Ghajnsielem.

The local council gave a donation of lm30 to the Arka Foundation. This presentation took place in the center at Ghajnsielem.

Some temporary work has been done with cement in Trejqet Wara l-Idjar, which was in a very bad state. It was leveled before the work was carried out.

The local council has given a donation of lm43 to the Gozo Red Cross Society for an upgrade of ambulances and protective garments.

The mayor attended Prize day which took place in the primary school ‘Sir Arturo Mercieca’ in Victoria. He presented a donation of lm30 in the name of the Fontana local council

Required maintenance is being carried out around Fontana by workers assigned by the council.

A social outing was organized by the council for everyone in general where 45 people attended. Many places were visited in the west and upper parts of Gozo including Ghadira ta’ San Raflu in Kercem, Santa Lucija, Dwejra, San Lawrenz, Gharb, Ghasri and Zebbug. Afterwards we went to the Hotel Calypso where those present were offered coffee or tea as well as various snacks.

On the eve of the anniversary of the consecration of the parish church, the mayor took part in a celebration on Saturday night where the twinning took place between our parish and that of Qalb Bla Tebgha ta’ Marija of Burmarrad in Malta.

The testimony continued in front of the assistant judicial in the court regarding the road humps in the upper part of Triq il-Ghajn. The mayor as well as Dr. Chris Said attended for the counsil.

There was a meeting between the Minister of Gozo, Giovanna Debono and the Local Counsils of Fontana and Munxar regarding the work which needs to be done this year on re-building Triq ix-Xlendi. The mayor, vice mayor, counsellor Lorry Apap and the executive secretary from the Fontana Counsil attended the meeting.

The mayor, vice mayor and counsellor Lorry Apap together with the executive secretary met with the architect Attard Montalto so that the plans for the office building of the council, community hall and public toilets can be emended.
17th January 2006
The death of Mr. Francis Schembri, husband of counsellor Maria Schembri was announced. The funeral will be today, 17th January at 4.00pm. The local council join the Schembri family is this moment of sorrow.

The council has advised that all bags are to be passed out to all residents in Fontana. Whoever has not collected theirs is requested to pick it up during the council’s office hours. These are being distributed one per family.

There is going to be a meeting between the council and the architect Attard Montalto on Wednesday, 18th January at 3.00pm so the plans for the building of the council office, community hall and other necessary facilities could be emended.

On Friday 20th January the mayor and the executive secretary are attending a meeting regarding littering with the Minister responsible for the environment, the architect George Pullicino. On that day as well at 4.00pm there is going to me a meeting with the Minister of Gozo regarding the work which has to be done on Triq ix-Xlendi.

There is going to be an outing to the south of Gozo, organized by the counsil, on Tuesday 31st January 2006. Details will be given later on.

There will be a D.V.D about the locality of Fontana that was commissioned by the counsil to the Citadel Video Communications.

The Mayor attends a dinner hosted by the Ministry for Gozo in honor of Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh.

A social cultural outing to Malta was organized for senior citizens were 47 people attended. This was done to commemorate both the Centenary of Saint Katherine of Alexandria and CHOGM event. We visited Zurrieq were mass was held at the Archipretal Church in Zejtun where we also visited the Archipretal church and the medieval Church of Saint Gregory. We were welcomed with open arms at both parishes. Afterwards we went to Valletta where Queen Elizabeth II was visiting then to the Valletta Waterfront as we stopped in at Sterling Jewelers to see the Queen's Mace which was on display. Afterwards coffee and snacks were provided by the by the council.

A visit was made to Siekel valley which included the Mayor, vice Mayor and a representative of M.E.P.A. from Malta to see if this part of Fontana can be made more accessible to the public. This appointment was done that to Ms. Annalise Falzon P.R.O. Nature Trust. It is in the councils plans that if a permit is given for this area, a passage will be made that will be a part of this rustic area and that all the indigenous plants and trees will be identified and labeled. Another visit was done at Xlendi valley because there is going to be an application submitted to M.E.P.A. in order to clean up the valley and restore the stone walls. We also visited Lunzjata valley.

Proceedings started in court regarding the "road hump" lawsuit that is being planned for the start of Triq il-Ghajn street to reduce vehicle speed. Maintenance was done on the Fountain Square project, the sidewalk at Kappillan Guzepp Hili street, the sidewalk and ‘retaining wall’ at J.Gaspard le Merchant street and Cardinal Alessandro Franchi street. Painting and furniture maintenance work was also done for the entire street of Fontana.

A social cultural outing to Malta was organized for senior citizens were 47 people attended. Starting with a Mass at the Madonna tal- Grazzja sanctuary in Haz-Zabbar, after which we visited the museum of the same sanctuary. This was followed by a visit to the San Lucjan tower which is the center of Aquaculture. We concluded with a visit to the Limestone Heritage in Siggiewi where the council provided coffee and snacks to the elderly after which we went to Girgenti on the landfills in Had-Dingli.

Fontana like the rest of Malta and Gozo were introduced to the ‘Green Wardens’ that will be patrolling in plainclothes. This will be an incentive to improve the level of cleanliness in our local villages. Stiffer fines were also introduced for those that continue to illegally dispose of their rubbish.

The mayor, vice mayor and the executive secretary along with miss Gozo Lucienne Attard that is from Fontana attended an activity in Bugibba for all the participants of the miss Malta pageant. During the ceremony, the Mayor presented miss Gozo to the audience.

Regarding the damage caused to the Fountain Square project in May 2002 during work that was being done by the sewer department, the Mayor and the official responsible from the sewer department Mr. Brian Borg made an on site visit and inspection.
The local council has approved Christmas and New Year's decorations by the Church and near the council office.

In celebration of Fontana Day, the council organized 2 competitions, one was for paintings and the other a composition the subject for both these contests was Fontana.

Every Monday during the month of October, the Mayor took part in a Radio program hosted by Ms. Maria Farrugia broadcast on the community radio station run by the Fontana parish church Radio Sacro Cuore.

During this week the Fontana Parish will be organizing its annual Sports Fest. 80 participants will be taking part in this event and the Local Council will be sponsoring part of it.

The mayor attends the ceremony to commemorate Victory Day in Independence square. He placed a wreath of flowers by the monument of Christ the King on behalf of the Fontana Local Council.

Recently, maintenance has started on the sidewalks at Fountain Square, Parish Priest Hili Street, the belvedere of John Gaspard Le Marchant Street and Cardinal Allessandro Franchi Street.

An application to restore the facade of the Great Fountain has been submitted since it is in a bad state. Some Graffiti depicting water vessels will be uncovered.

The council has decided to open the shelter at Pjazza l-Għejjun to the public. This shelter leads to Trejqet ix-Xagħri.
